Insurance Claims, Handled For You
We work with every insurance company. You make one phone call and we take the rest of them.
Talk to our body shop(517) 787-7509
Jim Winter Auto Body works with all insurance companies for collision repair in Jackson, Michigan. You choose the repair shop, not your insurer. We write the estimate, submit it to your adjuster, document any supplement found during teardown, and manage approvals so you are not relaying messages between two offices. In most claims your insurer pays us directly and you owe only your deductible at pickup.
Know this first
You choose the shop. Not your insurance company.
Your insurer may recommend a facility from its direct repair network. It may describe that shop as approved, preferred, or faster. What it cannot do is require you to use it.
There is nothing wrong with a network shop. But the choice is yours to make, and it should be based on who you want repairing the vehicle you put your family in, not on which shop has an agreement with the company writing the check.
If you want your vehicle repaired here, tell your adjuster it is going to Jim Winter Auto Body in Jackson. That one sentence is all it takes. We handle the rest.
First 24 hours
What to do after an accident
In order, and the last two matter more than most people realize.
Check for injuries and get to safety
Move out of traffic if the vehicle is drivable. If anyone is hurt, or if the vehicle is leaking fluid or will not steer straight, do not drive it.
Call the police and get a report number
A police report protects you if the other driver's account changes later. Get the report number before you leave the scene.
Photograph everything
Both vehicles, all four corners, the license plates, the road, and any debris. Take more than you think you need. Photos taken at the scene settle disputes that photos taken in a driveway cannot.
Exchange information, not opinions
Get name, phone, insurer, policy number, and plate. Do not discuss who was at fault. That determination is not yours or the other driver's to make at the roadside.
Call your insurer to open the claim
Report it promptly even if you are undecided about repairing it. Delayed reporting can complicate a claim later.
Call us and tell your adjuster where the vehicle is going
Reach our body shop at (517) 787-7509. From that point we write the estimate, deal with the adjuster, and keep you updated.
Michigan coverage
Who actually pays for the repair
Michigan is a no-fault state, but no-fault governs injury claims. Vehicle damage follows the coverage you chose.
| Situation | What usually pays | Your deductible |
|---|---|---|
| You were at fault | Your collision coverage | Due at pickup |
| The other driver was at fault | Your collision coverage | Depends on your policy and coverage type |
| You carry broad form collision | Your collision coverage | Waived if you are under 50 percent at fault |
| The other driver is uninsured | Uninsured motorist property damage, or your collision | Depends on your policy |
| Hail, deer, tree, or vandalism | Comprehensive, not collision | Comprehensive deductible, often lower |
| You choose not to file | You do | None. No claim on your record. |
A Michigan coverage detail worth checking on your policy
Broad form collision waives your deductible when you are less than 50 percent at fault. Standard collision charges it regardless. Most drivers find out which one they have only after a claim.
We are a body shop, not your insurance agent, and none of this is legal or coverage advice. Knowing which collision coverage you carry before an accident is worth the five minutes it takes to look.
Working with your adjuster
What we do so you do not have to
- Write a complete estimate based on teardown, not a photo
- Submit it directly to your adjuster and follow up on approval
- Document and submit supplements when hidden damage appears
- Supply photographs and manufacturer repair procedures when an estimate is questioned
- Coordinate rental arrangements when your policy includes rental coverage
- Confirm parts type on your estimate before anything is ordered
- Keep your repair status updated so you are not calling to ask
Questions
Insurance questions we get asked
Do I have to use the repair shop my insurance company recommends?
No. You choose the shop that repairs your vehicle. Your insurer may recommend a facility from its direct repair network, and it may tell you that shop is faster or pre-approved, but the decision belongs to you. Tell your adjuster you are taking the vehicle to Jim Winter Auto Body in Jackson and we will handle the rest of the conversation.
Is Michigan a no-fault state, and what does that mean for my vehicle damage?
Michigan is a no-fault state, but no-fault applies to injuries rather than vehicle damage. Repairs to your own vehicle are generally covered by your collision coverage regardless of who caused the accident. If you do not carry collision coverage, your options for recovering vehicle damage are more limited, which is why the coverage you chose matters more than who was at fault.
What is broad form collision coverage?
Broad form is a Michigan collision option that waives your deductible when you are less than 50 percent at fault. Standard collision charges your deductible regardless of fault, and limited collision may not pay at all if you were mostly at fault. Many drivers do not know which one they carry until they file a claim. It is worth checking your declarations page before you need it.
Do I pay you, or does my insurance company pay you?
In most claims your insurer pays us directly for the approved repair and you are responsible only for your deductible, which is due at pickup. We confirm that arrangement with your adjuster before work begins so there is no surprise on the day you collect the vehicle.
What if the other driver was at fault?
Bring the vehicle to us either way. In Michigan, repairs to your vehicle are generally handled through the coverage on the damaged vehicle, regardless of who caused the accident. The at-fault driver's insurance may be responsible for applicable liability claims, but your collision repair is handled through your own insurer and the coverage you selected. Your deductible is determined by your policy and coverage type.
What if the other driver has no insurance?
Uninsured motorist property damage coverage, if you carry it, is designed for exactly this. If you do not, your own collision coverage is usually the fastest path to getting the vehicle repaired. Report it to the police and to your insurer promptly, because both matter for how the claim is handled.
Will filing a claim raise my insurance rates?
It depends on your insurer, your history, and whether you were at fault. A not-at-fault claim affects rates differently than an at-fault one. If the repair is close to your deductible, paying out of pocket may be the better decision. We give you a written estimate before you decide, so you are weighing a real number rather than a guess.
Do I need to get three estimates?
Almost never. The practice of requiring multiple estimates is largely outdated, and no Michigan driver is obligated to shop their own damage around. Your insurer will write its own estimate or review ours. If an adjuster tells you that you must supply three, ask them to put that requirement in writing.
What if my insurer's estimate is lower than yours?
That is common and it is usually resolved between us and the adjuster, not by you. Insurer estimates are frequently written from photos and miss operations that only become visible during teardown. We document the difference with photographs and manufacturer repair procedures and submit it as a supplement.
Can I ask for OEM parts instead of aftermarket?
Yes, and you should ask what your policy actually allows. Some policies specify aftermarket or recycled parts for vehicles beyond a certain age. If you want OEM parts and your policy will not cover the difference, you can pay it directly. We will tell you which parts are on your estimate before we order anything.
Can I just pay out of pocket and skip insurance entirely?
Absolutely, and plenty of customers do, especially on smaller repairs. Skip the claim and there is no deductible, no adjuster, and no claim on your record. Call us for a written estimate and you can compare that number against your deductible before deciding either way.
